Premature Babies and Baby Formula
Having a baby, whether premature or full-term, is a blessed but stressful and life-changing event. And babies born early need special care and attention. Those “preemies” also often need extra nutrition. But studies have shown that premature babies fed some brands of baby formula, specifically bovine-based baby formulas such as Similac and Enfamil, are more likely to develop the bowel disease necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Typically, NEC develops in two- to six-week-old babies who were born early.
One study of more than 900 premature infants found that:
- Preterm infants fed baby formula were 6 to 10 times more likely to develop NEC than those fed only breast milk.
- Preterm infants fed baby formula were 3 times more likely to develop NEC than those fed both breast milk and baby formula.
That is one study. There are others. In fact, in 2012, a group of medical professionals representing the American Academy of Pediatrics announced that premature babies should only be fed human milk due to cow’s milk creating too much risk the babies would develop necrotizing enterocolitis
Knowledge of the link between premature infants being fed cow’s milk formula or fortifiers and them developing this serious stomach condition necrotizing enterocolitis is not new. It’s been found in studies for decades.
Enfamil and Similac Baby Formulas Do Not Warn Parents
